eSIM-only iPhones: the list and how to order

Updated 2026-09-09

Whether an iPhone has a physical SIM tray depends on the exact model and, for many recent models, where it was purchased. Do not infer the answer from a seller’s regional nickname. Record the exact model, A-number and purchase market for each offered unit.

Current eSIM-only hardware

  • iPhone Air: Apple says it is not compatible with physical SIM cards in any market. It uses eSIM only.
  • iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max: Apple identifies no-tray models sold for the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman. Other purchase markets need an exact-model check.
  • iPhone 14 through iPhone 16 families, including iPhone 16e: models purchased in the United States are eSIM-only.

Apple’s current SIM guide is the source for these categories. Apple can revise regional guidance, so check it again when approving a lot.

Earlier models and regional exceptions

Apple says iPhone 13 models and earlier have a nano-SIM tray. That does not mean every regional version has the same Dual SIM arrangement. Apple’s two-nano-SIM guide lists exact China mainland, Hong Kong and Macao combinations, with exceptions including iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini.

The same exact-model rule matters for newer phones. For example, iPhone 16e supports two nano-SIM cards only when purchased in China mainland; Apple routes Hong Kong and Macao versions through its eSIM guidance. iPhone Air remains eSIM-only everywhere.

What a no-tray listing establishes

Apple’s specifications identify these models as having no SIM tray or as incompatible with physical SIM cards. A software setting or eSIM profile does not add physical-SIM compatibility. If a destination requires a physical card, choose hardware that Apple lists with a nano-SIM tray.

How to specify an order

  1. State whether each requested phone must accept a physical nano-SIM.
  2. Request the exact model name, A-number and purchase market for every offered unit.
  3. Match those details against Apple’s iPhone identification guide and current SIM pages.
  4. Confirm eSIM activation and supported cellular bands with the destination carrier.
  5. Make the required SIM slot type part of the written unit list before payment.

BiteLot records the regional version, network-lock status, IMEI status, Activation Lock status and SIM slot type for each quoted unit. The model numbers and SIM guide explains the check, while how to order and the terms of sale hold the current ordering and dispute terms.

Availability is confirmed only in a dated quote. Send the destination, models, quantities and physical-SIM requirement with your inquiry.
